The 1996 Chaleur Estate (white) is two-thirds Sauvignon Blanc and one-third Semillon. Its alcoholic and malolactic fermentations were both done in Haut Brion barrels. It has an expressive nose of stones, minerals, and citrus/tropical fruits as well as a rich core of super-ripe white fruits, freshly cut grass, and lemons. This lovely and flavorful wine is reminiscent of a dry white Bordeaux, particularly from a warm vintage like 1990. It should evolve gracefully. Anticipated maturity: now-2004.
