Tasted at the Domaine, the 1985 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is superb, opening in the glass with aromas of ripe cherries, cassis, grilled meats, truffle and rich soil tones. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, satiny and layered, with melting tannins, a deep core of fruit and a long finish replete with savory nuance. Extensive domaine bottling didn't begin here until 1989, so this was bottled for the family's consumption. At the time, Maison Leroy was an important client for the Charmes-Chambertin.
